No warning when overwriting save states. sys49152 I've noticed that when you save to a save state position that has already been used - you don't get a warning about overwriting it. I find this very easy to do when you misinterpret the direction of the little arrow next to the disk icon. Especially when using an alternative controller (where the function of the buttons doesn't correspond to the on-screen button help). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- module180 [2]sys49152 This is a MAJOR bug bear for me as I have really lost count of how many times I have overwritten my save states, and I have to go back and resave them all over again. This is one of the best ideas I’ve seen/read regarding future firmware updates, and I will be a very happy man if the devs listen to your suggestion and fix this very important, and frustrating bug. Regards from module180 :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- oldskool A bug is an error in code, that which is not coded as we would like is a question of design. Though the latter can be as irritating in many cases as the former, the two are not the same. Whether this is a bug or a poor design choice only retro can say. Often enough you can have a bug and an issue of design that goes hand in hand. At Sony we had technical requirements for game saves, that were super sensible. The requirement was for saves/formatting and overwrites. When you chose any of these you were presented with a question and an explicit approval box e.g Are you sure you want to save? And the default option selected was 'no' - this ensured that anyone who inadvertently clicked on the option to save, couldn't mistakenly create saves or overwrite a favourite game save as it meant the user had to click on the option and also physically move from no to yes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- module180 [3]oldskool It's just a figure of speech, or a play on words, nothing more. Because of the irritating nature of the design, it bugs you when you have to redo a save state, because you have overwritten a previous one. Note when i said "This is a MAJOR bug bear for me, and this very important, and frustrating bug." Sorry if you were offended by this, but there was no need to explain something that most of us already know anyways. I didn't realise this was a school day after all... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- sys49152 [4]module180 I wonder if oldskool was referring to my subject line for this post. To be fair, I did put a question mark after it..... Anyway, I would agree with you and say it is a bug. Google the definition of a bug, and this usually includes "a flaw" or similar - which this definitely is. I doubt if the designers explicitly made the decision it to allow overwriting a save slot without warning. It was probably an oversight. Compare this to if I had said "there should be 10 save slots, not 4" - that wouldn't be a bug. We all want multi disk/tape/cartridge support - that is not a bug. It was an explicit design decision, an intended limitation (for now). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- oldskool [5]sys49152 - yea subject line. But again it wasn't having a pop at anyone. I hoped detailing how Sony avoided issues here might be of interest. Like I said it's one way to get past these kind of issues. I didn't even read the other fellas post re bug bear lol. Heyho lol -------------------------------------------------------------------------- spannernick1 I must admit I did get confused on what button Save and Load was,but am getting use to it now,but it is easy to press the wrong button.I don't know how many time I actually pressed Save instead of Load,at first the Save and Load icons were confusing, which was which, but that cause I have autism. Maybe the icon saying Save and then Load on the other would be better,I still have to give myself 10 seconds before I press the right button.( don't mean right as right,I mead right as in not the wrong button.. [6]:D ) Some things for me are so easy but other things that are easy for you are a lot harder for me. I love TheC64 Mini,I think we needed a upgrade to the C64DTV,This is a lot better,And it was a great idea,it just needs little tweak here and there. And still love it's big brother too.. [7]:D -------------------------------------------------------------------------- oldskool I'm not offended by anything anyone has said, I was just pointing out a slight but important difference between the two (bug and design issue). It wasn't pointed or at anyone's expense. In terms of changing how this works for the better, bug or design choice - the way Sony went about it is one solution. It might also be an idea to include a denounce function/input delay on the function as well, that way the user cannot inadvertently enter the menu and go to select overweight via a mistaken double press. There are other ways of fixing this. I have just detailed one. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- oldskool ^ debounce and overwrite ffs lol - forgive the typos. I am fighting with autocorrect and shitty virtual keyboard as well as a forum having a paddy on my phone lol -------------------------------------------------------------------------- scottyhp Oldskool’s post made sense to me. I play a lot of games, and gamers are pretty specific when they talk about a “bug” (error in code, a glitch, etc) versus something that was perhaps poorly designed and needs to be rethought or redesigned. Just my .02. And I won’t claim to know where this issue falls, I don’t have the mini yet so I haven’t used the save slots or even seen them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- spd1975 It's a great "feature request" as saving/loading works as designed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- oldskool [8]spd1975 It's very cool to be able to have and change out four entire games via the basic savestates. I've currently got these as my four save state games; Football Manager IK+ 4th & Inches Emlyn Hughes International Soccer -------------------------------------------------------------------------- spd1975 [9]oldskool It is very cool, but It would be good to have more save states - but that's another change/feature request [10]:) I'd like to be able to load and save all these on: [11]https://freeze64.com/c64mini-hacks/ Something I would like to do on the original c64 too (save/load game state that is). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- spannernick1 The funny thing about this forum is,you can't edit the title,shame... [12]:( Can a monitor or Admin remove the word "bug" please, then everything will then be finnnneeeeee... [13]:) Or you could rename it"Feature request: No warning when overwriting save states." All it needs is "Are you sure you want to do that" before the Save or Load.. [14]:D -------------------------------------------------------------------------- oldskool [15]spannernick1 It's no biggie. Flat forum - people think you are shouting when speaking quietly, think you are responding to them when you have not even read their post - just the crud that is inherent with forums. The issue is an issue lol - bug or design. Redoing it the Sony way is one option. It could still work in the context of the current UI/the joystick buttons - and just be coded with a pop up box - with do you wish to save. The key is to have an explicit approval box with yes and no answers with the default option as no - so the user actively has to move across to yes. It prevents inadvertently clicking a button and the ohhh shit moment of realising you have inadvertently overwritten your game/game state. I inadvertently did the very same as you guys are speaking of. If you use a differing controller as I am. Well, you gain in terms of response in game, but given the buttons aren't mapped or correspond to those on the joystick or UI prompts - you can easily delete your games. Once you figure out what button does what and write it down, you don't tend to get caught out again, but yea it can still easily happen and a friend or child having a go of your mini can still easily wipe a game off the basic save states by accident. It's good to keep some favourite games in the basic save states and not bugger them up. Won't be as bad once firmware allows for games on USB stick - but even then it could wreck seasons in football manager or any save in a game with depth. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/301/1 3. https://community.thec64.com/d/301/3 4. https://community.thec64.com/d/301/4 5. https://community.thec64.com/d/301/5 8. https://community.thec64.com/d/301/11 9. https://community.thec64.com/d/301/12 11. https://freeze64.com/c64mini-hacks/ 15. https://community.thec64.com/d/301/13
