Converting from CRT to D64 countermeasure Does anyone happen to know how to convert CRT images to D64? I have a few CRT's saved on my PC, from original cartridges (Jungle Hunt, etc..) Was wondering if there is a way to convert the CRT files to play on the C64 mini... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- MIK Most early cartridges should be out there some where as single .prg files as they were only small. Only in the 1990's did they really use more memory than what the machine had such as Flimbo's Quest, Ninja Remix and Myth which also exist on tape and disk. Just to remind people though about the Forum Rules as we are cutting it a bit fine: Do not post links to pirated software or promote software piracy in any form -------------------------------------------------------------------------- countermeasure [2]MIK Thank you, I'll search for the .prg's... (and no problem about not posting links to pirated software) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker If a cartridge was no more than 8k then it would be feasible to convert it into a PRG format file with an appropriate load address and add to a D64 disk image. Unfortunately, you'd then need to handle starting it. The reason why starting is an issue is that the Commodore 64's bootup routine checked for the cartridge and bypassed normal startup, instead loading the start address from the beginning of the cartridge. This mechanism wouldn't be available for you after loading from a D64 without manual intervention. If the cartridge was more than 8k or it filled the space occupied by BASIC then you have even more problems getting it to start. At the moment, I'd consider programs on cartridges to be infeasible. Hopefully, a future firmware update will allow cartridge files to be connected. This will open up a whole load of apps. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- countermeasure [3]RetroBiker Thank you RetroBiker... I understand... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker [4]countermeasure Thank you, I'll search for the .prg's If someone has managed to do a conversion and make it easily loadable, then you're in luck. I've never looked to see how many have been converted in the past. One advantage would be that cartridge programs are probable not going to need other files from disk, so if you do find one that has been converted, it should be self contained. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jammet Ah lot of the bigger CRTs will likely only be available as PRG or D64 as stripped down versions, as the cartridges may contain a lot more data than a floppy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- countermeasure [5]RetroBiker As the C64 mini is a modified version of VICE, I'd hope that there is some way to get CRT's to play on the C64 mini (possibly a future firmware upgrade [6]:) Would be great to play Prince of Persia on the C64 Mini!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- tomxp411 [7]countermeasure As the C64 mini is a modified version of VICE Has this been confirmed by the Retro Games staff? If so, I wonder when they plan to release source code, since that's required by GPL. Has anyone required source code yet? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jammet [8]tomxp411 Indeed. Some confirmation about that is an absolute must, because I don't want to throw the GPL around without being sure. It was suggested a few times that the emulator is an in-house development, made by a single person. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/270/2 3. https://community.thec64.com/d/270/3 4. https://community.thec64.com/d/270/4 5. https://community.thec64.com/d/270/7 7. https://community.thec64.com/d/270/8 8. https://community.thec64.com/d/270/9
