How will user created programs be saved/loaded? rldipaolo As a programmer, I'm very interested in knowing how this C64 will save and load user written programs. Of course I expect the old C64 commands to work - my point is more about where the programs will be stored physically and will it "appear" as if a cassette unit or floppy drive is connected? How much non-volatile storage is available for user written programs? Also, would someone who wrote a great new program on an original C64, or another new C64, be able to transfer it to this C64? If so, how? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arduinux Imagine if they also sold magnetic tape drives for this thing? Mixed emotions would abound. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- seeking_virtue WE MUST KNOW! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ReflectedLightEntertainment Probably as a D64 or .prg file or something like that on the main storage medium be it... probably a flash memory medium but conceivable if drivers and the underlying operating system running the emulator supports it, you may store the stuff on any modern storage medium using a file system recognized by the computer's operating system. Probably a FAT/FAT32 formatted Secure Digital or Micro-SD or USB thumb drive will work fine. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ReflectedLightEntertainment If I was making a C64 game for C64 users using an emulator, I would probably use any one of the follow:  1. Secure Digital or Micro-SD (w/SD adaptor)  2. USB Thumb drive  3. Compact Flash  4. CD-ROM/DVD-ROM if necessary The files would be in a format supported by the emulator such as D64/D71/D81, PRG, TAP, CRT, and some other formats recognized by common emulators. They would really just be Commodore files or disk images, tape images, or cartridge images stored in a file format the host computer would recognize and support under its file system architecture. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- rldipaolo [2]ReflectedLightEntertainment If I was making a C64 game for C64 users using an emulator......<< Look, I don't ever want to come across as rude - but I never asked your opinion about what you would do under some hypothetical situation, I was asking for a real answer. Why do you feel that everyone wants to hear what your contrarian opinion on the C64 Mini is and what you would do? The device hasn't even been released yet and you somehow feel that you have to counter it from the first with your "why don't you guys consider using an emulator" rants - as if we don't already know that C64 emulators exist. I have had and used several C64 emulators myself over the years - and still I'm interested in the C64 Mini, even though I know that concept is beyond your ability to comprehend. They have a name for posters like you..... trolls. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- rldipaolo Probably..... With all due respect, I wasn't asking for opinions, guesses, or prognostications - I was hoping that someone from the C64 Mini organization would give us a real answer. BTW, I see this morning that they have done it as an official announcement. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trinket We are happy to confirm that firmware and software upgrades will be possible via the USB ports, to allow more functions to be added to the THEC64 Mini in the future. This sounds like official THEC64-sourced upgrades can be installed, but it doesn't answer anything about users being able to freely load in their own software, or even saving from BASIC. This faux business trendy style of deflected and nonspecific semi-communication is frustrating, to put it politely. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/23/5
