C64 mini mainboard Darbyram Looking at videos online of the inside of the mini, there is a usb slot point on the board. i wonder if someone fitted one then would it work? Also the is a serial point that just requires a header fitting. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker [2]Darbyram Looking at videos online of the inside of the mini, there is a usb slot point on the board. i wonder if someone fitted one then would it work? As far as I'm aware, the A20 chip only supports two attached USB ports which are already provided. I don't think you have any choice except to use a hub if you want more ports. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [3]RetroBiker Sorry its an sd card slot point, not a usb slot -------------------------------------------------------------------------- SirGeldi The SD card slot point was used during development and is still on the PCB. I doubt it will work since there is already flash memory on the same address . I also doubt you can solder a slot on it without damaging the board. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [4]SirGeldi Maybe your right, but someone will prob do it anyway. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gurce Haha, funny you should mention this, because I've been doing some research into it and I think it will be possible to solder a micro-sd card connector onto the board along with some missing smd resistors and caps. It won't be for the faint-hearted, it'll certainly invalidate the warranty, but I'm very tempted to give it a try at some stage, after I've bought a spare c64 mini, in-case I fry this one in the process. I've shared a few notes on my train of thought with this on twitter, just in-case the forum doesn't approve of convos on these matters. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [5]Gurce whats your twitter name? And to be honest i have TSOP'd a few OG xboxes so this should be a piece of cake -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gurce [6]Darbyram twitter name: GurceIsikyildiz If you beat me to this (and I hope you do), share your steps on twitter and I'd be happy to follow in your footsteps ;-) (Just looking for any excuse for somebody else to take all the risks and I get the reward :-D) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [7]Gurce Lets just see what the updates bring to us, if it allows loading from the usb fully as it should of done in the first place then i will be happy with that. but then there is the serial connector which could open many things so lets just sit tight for now.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- spannernick1 Here is the board close up.. [8][IMG] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [9]spannernick1 Interesting that next to the power connector it says OTG? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gab75 [10]spannernick1 Thanks for the PCB photo... so theC64 mini has 256 Mbytes (2 Gbit) of DDR3 SDRAM: NT5CB128M16FP-DI (128Mbitx16 - 1600 data rate: 800MHz Double Data Rate)... for now I dit not succeed to identify the Toshiba NAND chip! [11]:P -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gurce [12]Darbyram Fair enough, perhaps our end goals and motivations are a little different. For my part, my hope was to use the micro sd-card connector as a means to boot into an alternate linux and try out other emulators for the vic20 and c128. My hope is to do it in such a way that leaves the c64 team's environment completely intact, I won't be touching their firmware on the NAND flash. Ideally, it'd be nice if I had a boot-loader on startup to select between the two environments, but that's more of a distant dream [13]:) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [14]Gurce [15]Gurce I like your ideas and line of thought, and I have no doubt that it will happen. Early days yet and firmware on the way. Looking at this device it could be an easy approach to get what we want. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- adgloride Hopefully they may give you the option of replacing the none functioning keyboard for a working one. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker [16]adgloride This is unlikely on the mini, though I wouldn't be surprised if some people do mods with working keyboards. The keys are far too small to type on in the conventional way, and the device is far too un-ergonomic to hold and type with thumbs like a modern mini-keyboard. It's just not practical to have a working keyboard on it. When the full sized version comes out, that will have a working keyboard, though... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gab75 Just for the record: the flash memory chip is a Toshiba "TC58NVG1S3HTA00" a NAND E2PROM of 2 Gb (256 Mbytes)...
