Awful joystick and restart issue LucianDK I recieved the C64 mini yesterday in Denmark, had ordered one from amazon uk last november. I had feared for the product when hearing how bad the joystick is. And it was true! Why in the world did you choose such a terrible joystick? Games is practically unplayable! Though to me it doesnt seem like input lag as described here. Holding the joystick, its painfully obvious that small nudges of the stick is simply not registered by the C64 mini at all. Only making larger motions is registered, making precision all but impossible. I well remember the joysticks from back in the day being far more precise than this pos. Also, Ive both tried plugging my C64 mini into the tv as well into an usb adapter to an outlet. Once turned on, and off. I cannot turn it on again without removing the power cord and reinserting it in the C64 mini. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- synchromesh [2]LucianDK Ive both tried plugging my C64 mini into the tv as well into an usb adapter to an outlet. Once turned on, and off. I cannot turn it on again without removing the power cord and reinserting it in the C64 mini. Hold the button for a few seconds ... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- LucianDK huh, that really wasnt obvious that you needed to hold it in for 3ish seconds. But the joystick is still bad for precise movement. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Killamarshian [3]LucianDK It tells you on the first pages of the manual. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- AndyF [4]Killamarshian you beat me to it ... the manual does state hold the button down for a couple of seconds to turn back on again. In all fairness though, how many of us actually read the manual? I'll admit I have, but only on day three of owning the mini! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- synchromesh [5]AndyF In all fairness though, how many of us actually read the manual? Not many including me [6]:) Even so we should shouldn't we .... You cant blame Retrogames for our own laziness and stupidity. Any suggestions where to put Information more obvious welcome [7]:) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- LucianDK to be honest, I didnt even notice the manual in the box. Ive found it now. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- synchromesh I saw it ...But you know how it is ... Didn't want to get it dirty with grubby fingerprints [8]:) What can a manual tell you that you don't already know ... How to turn it on it apparently [9]:) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- saramakos I'll admit I was weird and downloaded the manual a week before my device arrived and read through it reasonably thoroughly. I'll also admit that this was an anomaly and I am usually the first to ignore the manual. But if I am going nostalgic I wanted that feel of reading the manual on the way home from the shops when I bought a new game. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- rialdo If people can't even bother to skim the manual first, that's hardly the developer's fault. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- LucianDK Id dearly like to know if theres better and compatible joysticks for the C64mini. The packaged one is unusable Going to shelve the C64 mini until theres a better joystick available, or one having been discovered that is a far better replacement. I was so excited for it, but its just not useable with that bad controller. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival [10]LucianDK Going to shelve the C64 mini until theres a better joystick available, or one having been discovered that is a far better replacement. I was so excited for it, but its just not useable with that bad controller. I think that's going a bit far. I find it perfectly usable and for example, can easily turn and jump over robots in IM and then quickly search an item and then jump over him again as he comes back. Its not a quality stick but it 'does the job' which I think is all they were going after. I know its not perfect but it's certainly not going to stop me playing games on it - I just spent good money on it. If you're gonna shelve it, get a refund and then buy one when it is hopefully bundled with a better stick. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jammet How many Joystick threads do we have now? I stopped counting. Wish they could all be combined into one. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- HeavyDuty I wonder if retro games are slow or do not react to developing a decent retro style joystick a 3rd party might see it as an opportunity to make money if the mini is a big seller. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [11]W12MODS Complaining about it wont help the customers who already have the competition poo though, The C64 team are never going to replace them for decent models and end of the day if they make a decent one they will only make more money of the back of a cheap toy joystick they bundled with the machine. Just patch in better usb support for major brands of controllers as nobody really wants to shell out more cash on extra controllers when most of us have quite a few already, especially when they shouldnt have had to had the one supplied been fit for purpose. Personally i would feel if i had to buy a decent controller from them as rewarding them for poor effort (not trying hard enough) and penny skimping. Would have much rather paid more from the start to have a decent joystick in the box. End of the day most of the buyers expected the joystick to be the turd in the box but with the promised usb support that sort of eased the situation...that is until you find out that support is extremely lacking for now [12]:) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival [13]johnnyhotrocks Would have much rather paid more from the start to have a decent joystick in the box. This. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [14]Parcival Totally agree, i use it despite hating it, i just avoid it for my favs like monty on the run.....if i need a bit better precision controls for pixel perfect jumping i use the ps2 pad with a usb converter (logic3) and trade off weird button layouts (shoulder buttons for jumps) while i wait for xbox 360 controller support or even better one of this gens pads [15]:) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [16]W12MODS A modern xbox, Nintendo and PS pad will feel better in the hand and perform better as well. And they are easily found and most have a few lying around the house so your not forking out extra for something that shouldn't really have been needed. Now if they still made speedking joysticks i would be saying take my cash, one of the finest joysticks i ever had. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [17]W12MODS simple i hate the joystick but i paid good money for the machine and im not going to let it sit on a desk when i could be trying out some other games via the usb and then popping out some programmes / code from my old magazines and library books. Im patient i can give the team some time to sort out better usb support. Like i already stated if i need better movement and precision i plug in the ps2 pad with converter and put up with weird button layouts for better control until an update appears. Dont take this the wrong way but how is playing the mini with a pad not a retro c64 experience? Bugger that i been and done that like most of the people on this site, i rather have a perfect fit in your hand comfortable pad that works how i expect it to and be able to play games i never owned in the 80's & 90's I think you have buyers remorse......return the machine for a refund or just be patient and they hopefully come good. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [18]W12MODS I agree that this not a system to play with pads. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- [19]Next Page » References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/1 3. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/4 4. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/5 5. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/6 10. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/12 11. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/15 13. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/16 14. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/19 16. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/18 17. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/22 18. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/24 19. https://community.thec64.com/d/215?page=2&id=215-awful-joystick-and-restart-issue [1]The C64 Community Loading... And the only reason i keep the competition poo in the machine is because its easier to switch games because it has all the button in the right places. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [3]W12MODS Your bitchin for the sake of bitchin. A modern pad has these two things called analogue sticks built in.....you know JOYSTICKS. What do you expect them to do? Forget the joystick they are never going to replace them, it will cost to much and they go bust. They can though fix support for other usb devices and then you can go out and buy what ever joystick you desire. The full size C64 is coming for everybody who wants one whats your point exactly? I dare say they will be concentrating on updating the mini to get it to how the fans expect it to perform...be suicide if they dont and there be no full sized C64 as who will trust a company who dont give a shit once they have your money. Chill and plug in apad and try out some games from the usb while you wait for what ever your expecting to happen with the joystick. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [4]W12MODS Don't give people ideas lol -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [5]W12MODS Now your just being vulgar, have a good day sorry i helped you out now a few days ago as your coming across extremely self entitled and childish. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival They may indeed come out with a new Competition Pro style stick for the C64 Mini but I bet it won't be £19.99, more like nearer the price of the Mini itself...I'll happily eat the old joystick if they prove me wrong though. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [6]Parcival I'll happily eat the old joystick if they prove me wrong though. I am saving this just in case....lmao -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [7]Parcival I say they would aim at the £40-50 price mark like modern controllers [8]:) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [9]W12MODS There should be a proper forum on here with pinned posts and feedback etc...etc -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [10]joystck support for joystick/keyboard encoders would be great for things like this -------------------------------------------------------------------------- adgloride [11]Darbyram wouldn’t be a bad idea if we could build the joystick and it’ll work on the mini. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [12]W12MODS No i am NOT a fan of that team, i am surprised you was allowed to type it on here...lol -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [13]W12MODS Lol i like burton hope they don't....which team do you support then? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [14]W12MODS walks out the room and slams the door wished i hadn't asked.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram Forest fans are always posting that goal...you jammy barstools... but fair play to you on the day -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [15]W12MODS I can go off people rather easily...please keep on topic...lol -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [16]adgloride I have one built but its not quite right at the moment -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival [17]Darbyram I have one built but its not quite right at the moment And bloody lovely it looks too: [18]Belt -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [19]Parcival LMAO!!! i want one -------------------------------------------------------------------------- LucianDK I tried a couple games, such as my old favorite Thing on a Spring. The joystick was so bloody imprecise that the precise jumps needed was completely impossible to do. And I found it severely difficult to choose circuit lines in paradroid as the joystick does not register small movements at all, forcing you to make excessive movements. They NEED to give proper USB support to other controllers! Alas I ordered it from UK amazon, and im in denmark, too much hassle to send it back. Then just keeping it on a shelf till theres proper support for other controllers. I should note I have it connected to my 40 inch flatscreen tv, and its set to game mode. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- [20]« Previous Page References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/22 3. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/24 4. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/27 5. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/27 6. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/31 7. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/31 9. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/34 11. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/37 12. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/38 13. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/40 14. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/42 15. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/46 16. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/49 17. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/50 19. https://community.thec64.com/d/215/51 20. https://community.thec64.com/d/215?page=1&id=215-awful-joystick-and-restart-issue
