That would make for a great version of the classic Commodore 64! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ReflectedLightEntertainment You can do that with a Windows PC and a copy of WinVICE for $0.00. Considering the emulator costs nothing and does all that and also emulates the Commodore PET and CBM models, the Plus/4, C64, C64 with SuperCPU (20 MHz 65c816 accelerator with up to 16 MB RAM), Commodore C-128, C64 DTV v2/v3, all in it. It's not just a 1 trick pony. The emulator can be ran from the thumb drive and you can also store your games on it or any moutable volume recognized by the operating system whether it be a floppy disk, Iomega Zip disk, USB thumb drive, SD/micro-SD, Compact Flash, and any medium whether on IDE, SCSI, Serial ATA, USB, or whatever other methods of connecting a volume to the computer and being recognized with a drive letter (in case of Windows). Linux version works similarly in the context of Linux and how Linux mounts volumes to its entire system. If the OS recognizes the volume, the VICE emulator running on that OS will recognizes it and can load disk images, cartridge images, datasette tape images, from it or even be operated from it so in effect, you can take the emulator and collection with you on the go. If they artificially limit your ability to load up your own disk images, tape images, and cartridge images from USB thumb stick or other storage medium, then it would be rather lame of them considering they're using a free open-source emulator that should already support that ability whether it be Frodo, or a version of VICE or any other C64 emulators. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- zdooder VICE is amazingly great, but it's kind of hard to hook up a small, quiet, cool Windows PC with joysticks to my TV, at least not in the price point that I hope this will be in. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ReflectedLightEntertainment [2]zdooder There are Netbooks and Tablets using Intel Atom chips these days with keyboard that you can hook up a joystick and an HDMI cable to the TV for a fairly low price and runs Windows 10 operating system. As for your desktop or laptop computers, all you need is an HDMI cable and there are cables made long enough for hook up to a modern LCD / LED LCD TV. Some years ago, I got one of these: VIC-Slim from C=USA which is basically a Chinese keyboard computer. It ran VICE. I got it not so much because of the Commodore logo but that it was a nice simple keyboard computer and it was convenient to use in the tight space of a dorm at a University. You can achieve quietness by making sure you buy a stealthier fan for your CPU but keep in mind, you're investing in a modern / contemporary computer for more than just emulating a Commodore 64, right???? It's just one of the many different things you can use a contemporary era computer from serious work to playing games to watching movies and so forth. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- NeuromancerKid I really hope they offer a way to expand via usb thumbdrive. This way we will not be limited to the short list of games they are offering right now. There are some great titles out there that would be great to play again (Neuromancer, Maniac Mansion, Bruce Lee, etc) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- etamot At least for a many potential buyers of the new retro C64 THE ARGUMENT to buy it is, that they get an easy plug and play device that runs .d64 files direct on the TV-Screen without loading or instaling emulators. The fact that even basic is installed and the usb drive is able to read udates makes me quitly sure, that it wouldn´t be too difficult to jailbreak the device if it doesn´t work from the factory. At least they should thinking about give that feature free for all. It is the 100% selling argument. Many owners of old C64 devices could save the data on the new device and put the old one, that they keep for nostalgic reasons, away. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/19/3
