[1]The C64 Community Loading... This site is best viewed in a modern browser with JavaScript enabled. Great games! Braindome There's too much negativity on here about the C64 Mini. It has issues, but there are some great games that play really well on this little machine. I just wanted to say that so far I've had a really great experience with these preloaded games: Paradroid Boulder Dash Anarchy Mission A.D. And there's a great deal of promise in these, but they'll take some more time/practice to understand them better: Uridium Gribbly's Day Out Impossible Mission Nebulus Skool Daze Thing On a Spring And then I'm having a really great time with these games added via USB stick: DropZone Thrust Ballblazer Bruce Lee Dropzone and Thrust need a keyboard to play them properly, but they're every bit as good as I remember. Ballblazer suffers from some graphical flickering on the playing field. I think it uses a raster interrupt for switching the colours, and the emulator doesn't quite have the timing right. But it plays really well. If you're interested in trying it, remember you'll need to play as the bottom player on the screen due to the joystick mapping. Bruce Lee requires a second controller of some kind due to being mapped to the wrong port, but it plays really well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [2]Braindome i dont think negativity on here is about the C64 Mini itself but rather the joystick [3]:( its like buying a car and having a cardboard circle for a steering wheel. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- stuarty38 [4]Braindome how did u get Bruce Lee to work I can load the game but he doesn't move cheers -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [5]johnnyhotrocks well, there's also the lag... But let's keep this thread on topic. Look at all the great games[6]👍 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival Once into it, you will love Impossible Mission. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [7]Parcival do you think I'll choose to "Stay a while"? [8]😉 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [9]Braindome The choice of 64 games are personal some think they are crap others love them Personally i dont think they chose a decent spread of genres and to many similar games and not enough classics. One things for sure all the games will play crap when the vast majority have no choice but to use that competition poo clone they expected us to put up with, and finding a fully functional alternative usb replacement seems poorly implemented at this point in time until they patch in some decent support. If we're going to discuss the games we should go into more details like how the controls work with the game INCLUDING the competition poo as well as other usb pads [10]:) And if the game has stood the test of time or have the memories been tarnished after replaying after all this time. Monty on the Run is one of my fav games of all time and i play it regularly on the raspberry pi on an Amstrad emulator, its inclusion was one of selling points for the c64 mini for me, but had to stop playing it on the mini until decent controller support is patched in as its unplayable with that competition poo's imprecise movements...just about goes for every game on the mini........the experience and memories of all the games would be tarnished if i carried on. Hopefully next weeks upgrade adds some decent usb controller support and then the great memories should flood back....just for now most of us need to be patient. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moz333 Monty on the Run for me,....playing this the most at the mo...Personally i think the game selection is pretty good, and caters for most genres. If you find a dozen that appeal to you, like i have i dont think you can complain much at the price, especially as you can add your own favs anyway. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [11]Moz333 I loved Monty on the Run back in the day. I'm not sure I can bring myself to play it again now. That kind of game feels so dated to me. But it's worth loading up just for the Rob Hubbard music! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival [12]@Braindome I think you will "Stay forever...!" (or until the stick stays in one piece) Whoops! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [13]Parcival I'm definitely going to give it a proper go some time. Right now, I'm just obsessed with Thrust. It's flipping marvelous [14]😃 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival [15]@Braindome Wow, Thrust - haven't thought of that one in years. Wasn't that Firebird or Mastertronic? I remember it being a cheapie at the time.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [16]Parcival yep, Firebird. What a great game. Rock hard of course, but I've just played through to the reverse gravity section, which is really messing with my head [17]😃 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS [18]Braindome Firebird were one of my fave publishers I had Booty, Go go the ghost and bubble bobble. They made a Thrust 2 but Zzap 64 only gave it 42% while the original got 93%. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS [19]Braindome actually Thrust 2 got 59% but it looks like the gameplay wasn't as good as Thrust. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chickje Mega Apocalypse is amazing. The music rocks and it plays better here than on any emulator I've tried before. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS [20]Chickje an updated Crazy Comets I believe you should try that and see the differences. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chickje [21]W12MODS True, It's a remastered Crazy Comets with better sound & graphics. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ViktorH I added Samurai Warrior today. One of my all time favs! [22]http://www.zzap64.co.uk/cgi-bin/displaypage.pl?issue=037&page=012&thumbstart=0&magazine=zzap&check=1 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks Once the issues have been sorted with the muliple games booting form usb this machine will take off. Tried a few like commando / ye ar kung fu / kung fu master / green beret to name a few, all brought a smile to my face but like i mentioned already that smile would turn into frustration if you carry on until the firmware fixes start to churn out. wouldnt be fair to comment on the games until that happens. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS [23]johnnyhotrocks I had Green Beret but bloody hell it was hard does it play ok with the competition poo (copyright johnnyhotrocks) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [24]W12MODS Mostly it does because its left and right with the occasional ladder to climb or the ducking so no much need for diagonals. Yes you will get moments where you begin to duck or climb when you just want to go right [25]:( but im patient and prepared to wait a tad longer for my xbox 360 usb pad to work on it.....touch wood [26]:) Games not hard at all if you download a trained version with all those lovely cheats from the start LOL. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS [27]johnnyhotrocks I have a power a ps3 controller too try. Just got my Amazon dispatched notice which says Monday. Do they deliver on bank holidays? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- andrewxyz [28]johnnyhotrocks hi where do you find all those lovely cheats . Just got my Amazon dispatched notice which says Monday. Do they deliver on bank holidays? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [3]W12MODS Tried the ps3 pad it cuts out movement randomly, you think its working fine then it stops going one direction you move another its back and then it randomly goes off with an other direction of its choice. Sticks and d pad both affected. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS [4]johnnyhotrocks will let you know if the power a version works. The only game I ever completed was Wizball on the C64. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chickje [5]W12MODS True, It's a remastered Crazy Comets with better sound & graphics. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS [6]Chickje I am going to download Chuckie Egg first as my tape copy never worked. Don't know why I didn't take it back? But I was only 13 at the time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome All of the games I mentioned work really well for me, either with the default joystick, or a keyboard in the case of Thrust. I'm honestly really happy with how the system works. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS I think I am going to play wanted monty mole or boulderdash first. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scorf Back in 85 I was awestruck by Impossible Mission, eventually I memorised one of the room set ups and could complete the game without being killed or having to use the phone. Think it took about 17 mins to do it. One thing I've noticed so far is that whenever I have loaded the game you get the same room plan and configuration. Not tried pressing restore to see if that gives a new config as It did back in the day. For anyone encountering Paradroid - they are in for a treat. Its well worth tracking down the diary of a game feature that was in Zzap! in 1985. Andrew Braybrook treats his audience as adults and its a real insight into the writing of a game - he would repeat this in 87 with Morbius. I remember Zzap! giving Paradroid 100% for presentation, and its so well deserved. You are never waiting for some fancy effect or screen before you can get into the game - you just press fire. So many games should have learned from this. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- PantherUK [7]Scorf Yep I can confirm Restore works in Impossible Mission, its a bug in the disk version of the game that effectively kills the randomiser, you had to press Restore back in the day with the disk version... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Killamarshian I agree. Paradroid is a complete classic. Anyone who doesn't give this game a chance is missing out on something special. Don't forget to hold down the fire button to connect to another robot. Below is a quick demo. [8]IFrame -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker [9]PantherUK This is expected behaviour. Check out the game page for it on the website... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- SirGeldi I agree with Uridium and Paradroid. I never saw such a smooth Uridium since 1986 on real 64 with a PAL tube TV. But my real favorite game is M,U,L,E, wich is no problem to add [10]:) The only problem is it is only two Player (or 2 sticks). When i worked out how to connect 4 Joysticks i will have a great M.U.L.E. party with my old friends. We used the USER port to connect 2 more sticks back then. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Killamarshian [11]SirGeldi Me and my mate have a MULE night every week. It will be nice to play it on The C64 mini. It is just a shame we have never found a good online version. Multiplayer over the internet would be awesome. BTW search for the manual, we found out lately that there are lots of little things you can do that are not obvious. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS I think I will play the 5 games of the 64 that I owned first. It feels like Christmas Eve 1983 round my place, one more sleep till c64 mini day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- scottyhp Anyone gonna play Zork? I’m really curious if I would have the patience to play a text-only game again. But as a kid I was kinda intrigued by them. I played a few, including a murder mystery, lol. But I actually never played any of the Zork games, and I’ve always regretted that because I’ve heard they were perhaps the most iconic of the genre. Btw, I have fond memories of playing Mask of the Sun with my dad, though it had graphics. It would be interesting to find that one again too. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS [12]scottyhp were text adventures only on disk? I only had cassettes and never owned a text adventure game. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- scottyhp [13]W12MODS I think some were on cassette. In the video about the Hobbit text adventure game that’s on the C64’s Facebook page today, I saw them loading a cassette for the game. In fact most of the text games were precursors to the more graphical games and probably were published before floppy drives, at least initially. With that said, i never had a tape drive - I started with cartridges and then floppies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS [14]scottyhp disk drive was too expensive for me but I did have one cartridge International Soccer and I think it came with the machine. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- W12MODS Strange that the mini comes with a baseball game as I also had one World Series Baseball from Imagine. 1 am not American 2 I hate baseball. It must have been a present. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- scottyhp [15]W12MODS I enjoyed international soccer! They had the same game for basketball and it was pretty fun too. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks Attack of the Mutant Camels any of the Dizzy egg folk games Rambo first blood Ghostbusters R Type Head over Heels Saboteur And who can forget about elite LOL all should be on your list to try out [16]:) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [17]johnnyhotrocks i forgot about elite... :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- [18]« Previous Page [19]Next Page » References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/20 3. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/21 4. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/22 5. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/15 6. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/24 7. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/28 8. https://www.youtube.com/embed/EAbfvvIbxn0 9. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/30 11. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/31 12. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/34 13. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/35 14. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/36 15. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/38 17. https://community.thec64.com/d/174/41 18. https://community.thec64.com/d/174?page=1&id=174-great-games 19. https://community.thec64.com/d/174?page=3&id=174-great-games [1]The C64 Community Loading... Check out the game page for it on the website... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- trolliewallied My favourite games that come with the C64 mini are: Bounder Impossible Mission Monty on the Run Nebulus Paradroid Winter Games, World Games and California Games Ones which I will try adding once USB loading becomes easier are likely to be Head Over Heels (if the joystick in Port 1 option works) Parallax Trollie Wallie (my guilty pleasure - and the only game I've yet tried via a USB stick and it works brilliantly!) Re-Bounder Starquake Wizball If I can also get a USB stick and keyboard working at the same time, it would also be interesting to try Little Computer People and Sentinel. And if multi-disk loading is possible, the Games Winter Edition and the Last Ninja games. But all in all, a great start by the C64 mini team, and a great choice of games with some real classics. I'm still absolutely loving my one. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome Wizball, Parallax, Ghostbusters, Rambo first blood part II, and Sanxion are all high on my list for trying soon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scorf The infocom (Zork, Hitch Hikers etc) were never released on tape in the UK as far as I remember. I only ever had one - Starcross I think, and it annoyed me intensely that every time you entered a command, the program accessed the disk. Remember this is the 1541 we are talking about - the slowest, most god-awful disk drive in the world... Had to smile though when watching Young Sheldon last week as he was pondering cutting notches into the other side of the 5.25 inch floppy, thus allowing the other side to be used. I did that with all of mine! Getting back to Paradroid, its a shame that the version on the mini is the original release. Andrew Braybrook was almost unique in that when his games were re-released on compilations, he usually revisited the code and improved it. Hence the Paradroid that came with Uridium as a double pack is noticeably faster to play. I think theres also a version called Heavy Metal Paradroid with altered graphics which runs every faster. I think I inwardly wept when I played Paradroid 90 (or whatever it was called) on the Amiga and was appalled that it wasn't a 360 degree scroller. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [3]johnnyhotrocks i forgot about elite... :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival [4]@trolliewallied LCP by Activision! So many memories of that one. I loved the way he danced to the music. The worlds first Tamagotchi in my book [5]:D -------------------------------------------------------------------------- synchromesh [6]Parcival The worlds first Tamagotchi in my book [7]:D Absolutely agree and your correct... When the Tamagotchi was first released here in 1996 my kids refused to believe I was doing this on my C64 10 years before that and before they were born actually [8]:) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival [9]@Scorf Correct. All Infocom were released on Disc only. I had the original of Leather Goddesses of Phobos and HGTTG. My disc-notcher was a Stanley knife and a steady hand but in the early days some notches were like a mile wide! I remember loving certain types of blank disc. TDK and Verbatim were nice to collect in their original sleeve but some I got through the post from Germany were god awful quality. Thin as paper. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- scottyhp I seem to remember using a hole puncher and just making half a circle hole as the notch. Either that worked, or it didn’t and I messed up some disks trying ... OR my faulty memory is imagining the whole thing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gee I havent bought this yet but after reading the positive posts i think i will order it soon. A quick question, do the games have loading screens? One of the best things on the C64 was the music. Rob Hubbard’s Sanxion wow! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [10]Gee sadly no. Loading is almost instant, no loading screens. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [11]Gee you inspired me to start my SID player thread. It may at least be a way to play those loading tunes that we're missing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Killamarshian [12]Gee If you want loading screens and you have a fairly good PC, buy C64 Forever. That can accept .tap images as well as .d64 and if you so wish they can have the loading screens. See my video below from ages back. This was done with C64 Forever. [13]IFrame -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Killamarshian [14]Gee For some reason I can edit my post above. I was wrong get VICE, I am not sure buying C64 Forever will give you what you want. Vice is free too. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- mrrockitt [15]Gee Hi. I know this is about the C64Mini but just wanted to say I use this App to play SIDs on my Android tablet and it works pretty well: [16]https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.zxtune I know there are plenty of SID players but the reason mention this one is that it doesn't just play SIDs (as you can probably guess from the name.....) Cheers [17]:) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [18]Killamarshian well, I have a Mac, not a PC. And more to the point, we're here to have a bit of fun with the C64 mini! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Killamarshian [19]Braindome OK I was just trying to help. The Mini is the most accessible way to play C64 games, but he wanted to experience the loaders. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [20]Killamarshian sorry, my mistake. I thought that was directed at me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gee Thanks guys. That’s a shame that there is not an option or something to play the music. Yes i have an emulator on my mac with the option of loading screens etc, which is excellent, but i havent used it for a while. I am only really getting back into the C64 because i like the idea of just ‘plug in and play’ which the mini provides. [21]@Braindome it’s great to start that SID thread. There are so many good tunes, Green Beret, Rambo, Ocean soundrack, etc... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- andrewxyz [22]johnnyhotrocks hi where do you find all those lovely cheats . Have asked on a few sites if there is or will be a reset function for pokes and cheats -------------------------------------------------------------------------- johnnyhotrocks [23]andrewxyz Download a rom file with a trainer already coded into it. Or download the action replay rom [24]:) It will tend to have T followed by a number eg: Green Beret (T3) T=trainer the number will be how many cheats are there like inf lives, engery & ammo [25]:) Just about every game i ever downloaded or wanted has an un modded rom and a cheat version. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- andrewxyz [26]johnnyhotrockstt Thanks so much for that it will make such a difference. All I need now is to replace the c64 minis joystick with a more responsive one. Thanks again. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- stuarty38 [3]Braindome how did u get Bruce Lee to work I can load the game but he doesn't move cheers -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Braindome [4]stuarty38 I used a PS4 controller to select BASIC before loading the game. The PS4 controller doesn't work reliably with the C64 mini, but you only need it to launch BASIC. You can unplug it if/when it starts causing problems. Using this controller causes the C64 joystick to be mapping to the other C64 joystick port, thus allowing it to be used for games like Bruce Lee. It's a bit of a pain, but hopefully a future firmware update will make this workaround unnecessary. Another other game controller that's recognised by the system can be used as an alternative. Another option I've heard of is to hack the game (or find an already hacked version) so it uses the other joystick port by default. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker [5]stuarty38 how did u get Bruce Lee to work I can load the game but he doesn't move cheers The point here is that when you just have one controller, it is configured as port 2 so having another controller connected when you go into BASIC will mean you have one on port 1 which most (many?) games will expect. I understand that a future firmware upgrade will fix this. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- mrrockitt Loads of great games on it and more mentioned above. Off the top of my head, first three games I plan to install: Spore IK+ Kickstart II Would also like to say I love the C64 Mini, can forgive the joystick woes for now and once I get my USB Competition Pro going the Wife will see even less of me! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- mrrockitt [6]Gee Hi.
