Future project suggestion - 1541 disk drive replacement tmb_steve The 1541 disk drive is notoriously unreliable. if someone could make a modern equivalent, fully compatible with original c64, i'd buy one! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- cicavec [2]tmb_steve [3]http://www.1541ultimate.net/content/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=74&catid=9&Itemid=127 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ReflectedLightEntertainment The 1541 disk drive wasn't notoriously unreliable. Notoriously slow.... yes. The 1541-II and 1571 disk drives were notoriously finicky when it comes to copy protected programs. HOWEVER, THEC64 is an ARM based computer system running a C64 emulator so no physical 1541 will be used on this system. THEC64 Mini does not have a Commodore Serial Port. You will need to use a device such as ZoomFloppy to interface the Commodore Serial Bus device over USB and then there will need to be a port of the OpenCBM for ZoomFloppy to be made for this ARM based system. Once you have the ZoomFloppy and ports of the drivers working for this system's emulator, then you'll be able to use ANY device made for the Commodore serial bus. Had this system been an x86 system running Windows or Linux and using VICE/WinVICE, you would or should be able to use this out of the box provided the drivers were installed and tested to work. They would have to compile and install and set up the drivers so they work right out of the box once you the user has a ZoomFloppy to make life more user friendly for the user so that it's as "plug and play" as you would want it to be with just simple user modified configuration settings for using real IEC (Commodore Serial bus) devices. You will probably need a powered USB hub that is supported by whatever underlying OS running on this system so that you can plug in a keyboard, joystick(s), mouse, and ZoomFloppy. They would need to make the drivers for the ARM system and OS so it would likely be more involved than you would want to do yourself. Until that happens, if it happens, you are unlikely to be able to use ZoomFloppy and possible any other IEC (C= Serial Bus) to USB cable/interface with this device. Without it, you won't be able to use the real hardware. They appeared to have made decisions intentionally to make this difficult. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/17/1 3. http://www.1541ultimate.net/content/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=74&catid=9&Itemid=127
