Add games with multiple *.d64 files Shampi Is it possible to play games with multiple d64 files (eg. Maniac Mansion)? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker [2]Shampi Not at the moment, but it will be after the firmware update due this weekend. Check the website for details... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker [3]Shampi Just looked and the release date for this update has been pushed back a week or so. The first firmware update will be next week and doesn’t have the multi-disk support, yet, but the second update will. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- chrisa1981 [4]RetroBiker ive looked all round the site and cant find anything about new firmware, can you please post a link to this? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shampi Allrighty [5];) I can wait. There's anough to do with it right now [6];) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plzsm That’s a shame, especially when it was due this week, bit disappointed by coming soon, could be any time that -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gurce Ah well, I can forgive them for not rushing it. I know it would be very tempting to do a quick firmware release without thoroughly testing, hence fixing some things, and accidentally breaking others. So for me, it's a good sign that they're not rushing and being too hasty. But I'll acknowledge that the hunger/demand/appetite from the end users for such features will be enormous ;-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plzsm I kind of agree with you, better not to rush and don’t want to be too critical but I also don’t understand why this wasn’t done before and in time for the launch as the ability to uploaded your own games was part of the selling brief and they must have known the system they have provided for this is suboptimal. I just hope it doesn’t get pushed back and back because in fairness to them it can’t be the highest priority -------------------------------------------------------------------------- spinal I hope they will support .crt files, I hope to be able to play [7]Sam's Journey on here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- flibblesan [8]spinal you will be able to play Sam's Journey. It boots as far as asking for side 2 to be inserted, but at the moment the unit cannot do disk changes. But it's great that the game boots at all since it shows the mini has decent 1541 emulation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shampi And *.t64 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plzsm So i have tried uploading 3 .d64 files so far. Two worked but it took a long time at the loading part, several minutes, maybe >5 mins for one. The other one i gave up after leaving it for >15 mins. Anyone else finding that? No problems if thats to be expected but i assumed it would be much quicker. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- naivri [9]multiple disk games do work -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plzsm they arent multi disk games -------------------------------------------------------------------------- naivri [10]Plzsm When you are asked to change or flip disks in the program, press the MENU button on the Joystick and save your current position in one of the four slots available to BASIC Exit to the Carousel and then remove the USB memory stick from THEC64 Mini Insert the USB memory stick into a computer and rename THEC64-drive8.d64 to something else memorable – let’s say MYDISK1.d64 Copy the second disk image file to the USB stick and name it THEC64-drive8.d64 Pop the USB stick back into THEC64 Mini, ensuring you’re still on the Carousel screen Launch BASIC from the Carousel Press the MENU button on the Joystick and load the position you saved earlier from one of the slots on THEC64 Mini Follow any on-screen instructions from your program regarding what to do next. Seems like multi-disk games to me? Get the to the switch point, save image on mini. Copy disk 2 to usb stick, call it required filename, go back into basic so it mounts USB, then load image back up -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gurce [11]naivri When Plzsm said "they arent multi disk games", I think the "they" he was referring to were the 3 .d64 images he tried. I.e., he had 3 .d64 images (with one game on each of them) :-) So his comment seems to relate more to the loading speeds he experienced. In this regard, I recall reading somewhere (or perhaps watching a youtube vid) that someone commented on this too, and thought that perhaps the device emulated the c64 disk drive at its original serial speed, so no fast-loading facility yet (apart from waiting for the long load and making a snapshot). The in-built games don't seem to have to endure any great load times though, so I wonder how they accomplished this... Perhaps an internal/hidden snapshot is used? Or possibly their emulator upon startup is capable of selecting a file within a disk and forcing that file into the c64's memory immediately? Not sure of course, just a few guesses :-) Another possibility I pondered, I think some games, as they loaded, would try to fiddle with the c64's disk drive in order to make it talk at a faster baud rate. Is it possible that their emulation of the disk drive hasn't catered for this? If so, maybe a workaround might be to try load your game in another emulator first and then figure out a way to save a snapshot of the game there into a new d64 file. This method would only really be suitable for games that only had a single-load for them (i.e. the game just tries to fill the c64's memory from disk once on startup, and doesn't load any additional data from disk afterwards, e.g. new levels) Not sure of the exact steps done to do this, if I ever give that way a try and have some success, I'll jot my steps down here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker [12]Gurce I imagine the built in games are snapshots. After all, it’s only 64k to have a full snapshot of the machine. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plzsm yes, Gurce is right, i was talking about the three games i have tried, roughly one took 2 mins, the other about 5 mins and the other i gave up after 15 mins, however it was an old USB. I am going to try another USB and another game. Will report back -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plzsm ok, i am not having much success, given the hassle of repeatedly typing the commands via the virtual keyboard i think i will give up until the firmware update, 64 other games to play with. for info, i have an old USB stick that formats to FAT32, i have a new 64GB one that wont. I just tried 2 new games on the old one and they actually loaded in 2.5 mins each. However despite the opening screen coming up, pressing the buttons didnt do anything. So, i think i'll wait.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gurce I noticed somebody had some steps for taking snapshots and dropping them onto a fresh d64 file. So if your game was a single-loader (no extra loading of levels and stuff after the game loads), then this method might work around problems with initial fast-loader routines. I wanted to add a direct link to it here, but was concerned that the powers that be might feel the steps within don't adhere to forum rules (I.e., encouraging the download of a freeze cartridge tool), so I'll just say the tweet was from "Vinny Mainolfi / FREEZE64.co.uk" (for those that want to google for info on his method). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gurce Ok, on a slightly different topic (maybe I should've made a new thread, but oh well). Wow, this guy Vinny is on fire, this other tweet from his is worth sharing me thinks [13]:) [14]IFrame -------------------------------------------------------------------------- [15]Next Page » References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/1 3. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/1 4. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/3 7. https://www.knightsofbytes.games/samsjourney 8. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/8 9. https://thec64.com/troubleshooting/ 10. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/12 11. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/13 12. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/14 14. https://s9e.github.io/iframe/twitter.min.html#979313304387678209 15. https://community.thec64.com/d/129?page=2&id=129-add-games-with-multiple-d64-files [1]The C64 Community Loading... Add games with multiple *.d64 files chrisa1981 [2]RetroBiker ive looked all round the site and cant find anything about new firmware, can you please post a link to this? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RetroBiker [3]chrisa1981 As HeavyDuty says, go to the update page. It has information on expected timescales for the next two firmware updates. Looks like the first update will be available on Thursday... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- HeavyDuty [4]https://thec64.com/upgrade/ I hope the above link will provide you with the info. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival [5]@flibblesan day ago spinal you will be able to play Sam's Journey. It boots as far as asking for side 2 to be inserted, but at the moment the unit cannot do disk changes. Yes, you can do multi-disc games. You just need to use one of the save slots and then have side 2 as the .d64 file. Instructions here on the Support page: Multi-disk Games Provided that the first disk of a multi-disk program works correctly, you can swap disks on THEC64 Mini at the required moment. For a two-disk program, the current procedure is as follows: When you are asked to change or flip disks in the program, press the MENU button on the Joystick and save your current position in one of the four slots available to BASIC Exit to the Carousel and then remove the USB memory stick from THEC64 Mini Insert the USB memory stick into a computer and rename THEC64-drive8.d64 to something else memorable – let’s say MYDISK1.d64 Copy the second disk image file to the USB stick and name it THEC64-drive8.d64 Pop the USB stick back into THEC64 Mini, ensuring you’re still on the Carousel screen Launch BASIC from the Carousel Press the MENU button on the Joystick and load the position you saved earlier from one of the slots on THEC64 Mini Follow any on-screen instructions from your program regarding what to do next. If at some point the program needs the first disk again, follow the above instructions from step 1, but this time rename THEC64-drive8.d64 on the memory stick to something else (e.g. MYDISK2.d64), then rename the other disk image file to THEC64-drive8.d64). As with all other aspects of loading programs, this will be significantly improved with our advanced loader. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shampi Is the mini able to emulate .t64? Or is there a way to convert .t64 to *.d64? [6]:D I want Bruce Lee! :p -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [7]Shampi bruce lee is out there as a d64 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parcival I use DirMaster to change my T64 to D64 images. You just load up the T64 file and create a new D64 and name it TheC64-drive8.d64 Then just drag over the PRG files you want and save the D64 file to your USB. As you can see, I recreated Bruce Lee as a D64 and it plays just fine [8] [9]Bruce Lee -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Darbyram [10]Parcival people have said there is a problem with the joystick port. So there is a Bruce Lee version out there to help with this issue [11]😉 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jammet Wouldn't mind being able to create fliplists, like with Vice, eventually. Once I can play Ultima 6 on this, without having to train as a disk jockey and an emulator wrangler, I'm happy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- [12]« Previous Page References Visible links 1. https://community.thec64.com/ 2. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/3 3. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/21 4. https://thec64.com/upgrade/ 5. https://community.thec64.com/u/flibblesan 7. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/25 10. https://community.thec64.com/d/129/27 12. https://community.thec64.com/d/129?page=1&id=129-add-games-with-multiple-d64-files
